I have never been to one of the Wadden Islands and this has changed last weekend. A weekend to Texel was planned to celebrate my father's birthday (60) with the family, congratulations dad!
Friday morning I, together with my brother, left for the Wadden island of Texel. The rest of the family drove a different car. From my city Deventer it is according to Google Maps only 3 hours drive including the boat crossing.
Unfortunately, nothing could be further from the truth, because in Den Helder it turned out that we were not the only ones who had thought about Texel for a weekend or day. After an hour of traffic jam, without air conditioning, we got closer to the ferry. Fortunately, we were able to drive on quite easily and we did not have to wait long, because we had bought the tickets online in advance.
With a short crossing to the island of Texel, the trip could go to the northern part. We had rented a house in Landal Sluftervallei. It is a beautiful park with very nice houses. The facilities they have are also good.
The park is a perfect walk from the beach. After a 10-minute walk in the dunes you end up on the beach. There was a lot of wind, so sitting on the beach was not an option.
Den Burg is the largest town on the island where many tourists can be found. And so do we. Various tours can be booked in the harbor, such as viewing seals, fishing for fish and shrimp. We chose to view seals. We sail out of the harbor with a boat that is suitable for about 12 people.
The boat trip was wonderful and I think that was mainly due to the perfect weather. Around 25 degrees and with a nice breeze. You can get wet on the boat and some had experienced that. But in this weather it was not a punishment.
Seals are most common in the Wadden Sea. During low tide they lie on the sandbanks and sunbathe. See the seals I've seen below.
To explore the island in a nice relaxed way we rented a number of Solexs. A Solex is a type of bicycle with an auxiliary motor. And traditionally comes from France.
And especially on an island like Texel, where there is a lot of wind, it is ideal to rent a Solex or scooter. You have enough time to look around you and you can see more of the island than when you rent a bicycle and is perfect for a day trip.
