International driving license for backpacking
Everything you need to know about the international driving license when backpacking can be found here. In many countries outside the EU, an international driving license is required if you are going to rent a car, camper, motorcycle or scooter while backpacking.
What is an international driving license?
Let's first look at what an international driving license actually is. The international driving license is nothing more than a translation of your Dutch driving license into different languages that you can use abroad. The driving license is then available in English and a few more languages, making it understandable for almost everyone which vehicles you are officially allowed to drive.
In many countries outside the EU, an international driving license is required if you want to rent a car, scooter, motorcycle or other vehicle. This international driving license is not a replacement for your Dutch driving license. So always take your Dutch driving license with you, because that is your official document.
How long is an international driving license valid?
The validity depends on the type of international driving license you have. There are 3 different types and depending on the country you are going to, you need 1 of the 3 types. The most common is "Model 1968" which is then valid for 3 years.
International driving license models
These are the 3 different international driving licenses you can have.
Model 1968 with gray cover (± 25€) = 3 years valid Model 1949 with gray cover (± 19€) = 1 year valid Model 1926 with white cover (± 19€) = 1 year valid (only valid in Somalia)
Backpacking and international driving license
If you want to go backpacking in Thailand, you need the 1968 variant. If you then go to Vietnam, you can go on the same international driving license.
If your trip then goes to Australia, you will need model 1949 as an international driving license. If you are going to make a world trip, it may be a good idea to apply for both.
When renting a scooter in Asia, they hardly ever ask for your international driving license. This is more for if you are stopped by the police in, for example, Thailand, Vietnam or Indonesia.
Keep in mind that you are not allowed to drive most rental scooters if they are 125cc, if you do not have a motorcycle license. 125cc is quite normal in Asia, but you don't actually need a driving license for that and the international driving license is not valid then either. And insurance technically this could be a problem.
Arrange an international driving license (at the ANWB)
Now that you know more about the international driving license, you can apply for it. You can do this at one of the ANWB stores in the Netherlands. Make sure you apply in person and bring 2 official passport photos (depending on which international driving licenses you apply for) and your driving license.
And once you have applied for it, don't forget to take it with you on your backpack adventure!
